As the regular season ended today, our 95-67 Red Sox will face the 97-65 Angels. Before we enjoy that series, let's take a look at some key stats for our boys of summer!
Our starting lineup:
1. Jacoby Ellsbury:
.301/8/60: Amazing job in the leadoff position, led the league with a whopping 70 steals.
2. Dustin Pedroia
.296/15/72: Great follow-up MVP season, led league in runs scored with 118. 48 doubles.
3. Victor Martinez
.303/23/108: Superb pick up in late July. Won starting C position from Varitek, also DH and 1B.
4. Jason Bay
.267/36/119: Finished 2nd in RBI and tied for 2nd in HR. Stud All-Star.
5. Kevin Youkilis
.305/27/94: Another great year. .413 OBP. Played both 1B and 3B.
6. David Ortiz
.238/28/99: Great year after horrific start and steroid controversy.
7. J.D. Drew
.279/24/68: Solid .392 OBP. Solid year all around.
8. Mike Lowell
.290/17/75: Good year despite major injuries
9. Alex Gonzalez
.284/5/15: Great late season pickup, 148 AB in 44 games. Great defense.
The team clearly has a stacked lineup. Here were the backups:
-Jason Varitek: Started off hot but was horrible down the stretch. 14 HR 51 RBI despite .209 av.
-Nick Green: was solid for most of the year. His play forced out Lugo. Currently injured though.
-Rocco Baldelli: was a rarely used 4th OF. Did okay when healthy, but currently injured.
-Jed Lowrie: battled injuries from day one. Never healthy, a non-factor this season.
Other players who were used sparingly include Kottaras, Kotchman, Bailey, Gathright, Woodward, Anderson and Reddick.
As far as pitching was concerned, we'll start with the 2009 starters who will pitch next week:
1. Jon Lester, 15-8/3.41. Ace all year. Started 32 games. 225 K's. Scheduled to start Game 1.
2. Josh Beckett, 17-6/3.86. Horrible April but was solid from then on. 32 starts and 4 CG.
3. Clay Buchholz, 7-4/4.21. 16 starts despite starting season in Triple A due to lack of room.
The team also had a slew of others:
-Tim Wakefield, amazing season that earned him a spot in the All Star Game. Currently injured.
-Brad Penny, started 24 games but his 5.61 garnered his release.
-Dice K, went from Cy Young contender to bust. Spent year in minors, call up in Sep, looks good.
-Junichi Tazawa, called up from minors and did well in his brief stint. Will be ready again soon.
-John Smoltz, joined club in July, started 8 games. Not a single one of them quality. Bust.
-Paul Byrd, signed late in year, did okay, may pitch out of bullpen in playoffs.
Taking a look at the bullpen, arguably the best in baseball.
-Jonathan Papelbon, All Star. Pitched in 66 games, 1.85 ERA, 38-41 saves, 76 K's.
-Daniel Bard, heir-apparent, 2-2, 3.65 ERA, 63 K in 41 IP. Amazing rookie season.
-Hideki Okajima, stellar, 6-0, 3.39 ERA, very good.
-Ramon Ramirez, great year, 7-4, 2.84 ERA, 70 games.
-Manny Delcarmen, inconsistent at times, 5-2, 4.53 ERA, 64 appearances.
-Takashi Saito, solid, 3-3, 2.43 ERA, 56 appearances.
-Billy Wagner, great pickup, 1-1, 1.98 ERA, 15 games.
