A week ago today, the Red Sox had 62 wins. They still do.
Last week in this space I mentioned how this past week was the biggest 6 day span this season. Well, they lost them all. The Sox picked the worst time to play their worst baseball of the season. It's gotten so bad that the team has not scored a single run since Thursday, or just as bad, no runs in 28 innings. I've never witnessed anything like this from our boys of summer. Ever.
The two games in Tampa were disappointing. The opener watched a late 2-0 lead disappear before going into extras. With numerous opportunities to score they did not, and lost in 13 innings. After leaving Tampa with no victories, the team left despondent to NY. The team had lost 2 games in the standings in 2 games, and sat 2.5 games behind the Yanks. Smoltz took the hill for the 8th time this season and inevitably his last. He got knocked around after blowing a 3-1 and gave up 8 runs in 3 innings. He was released a few minutes after the game. The biggest blow came the next night. With the team down 3.5 games, they gave the ball to ace Beckett. He pitched 7 strong, and the game was tied 0-0 after 9. With a game of this magnitude, it's a wonder why the team couldn't find a way to score a single run in the 10, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and most importantly the 15th. The Yanks won on a 2 out Arod homer. The Sox had lost again. The next game the team got shut-out again. Sabathia ws impressive and the feeble Red Sox bats were silent. That is where we sit today. The team plays in NY tonight with pride on the line. The team is 5.5 out of 1st, the farthest away they have been. A win tonight would mean a 4.5 deficit, far better than 6.5. It's vital, for both pride and a 2 game swing, that Lester gets the support he needs to avoid the 4-game sweep.
The team does deserve a small pass due to injuries and distractions. The Big Papi steroid/PED cloud has demoralized him, as he's 1-25 this week. Bay is hurt, Wake is hurt, Dice is hurt, Lowrie was put back on the 15-day DL, as was Rocco. Drew is hampered with injuries too. It's a tough time, but they gotta get it together tonight and then for a 4-game home series with Detroit. Then revenge will be on, as the Sox head to Texas(they are only 1 game back of us for the much coveted wildcard), where the Sox got swept last month and are only 1-5 vs. Texas this season.
