While the focus of late includes the Celts, Bruins and Eagles, 2 other local clubs stole some headlines. The Red Sox are in the midst of their Grapefruit League schedule. I'm not very interested. Meanwhile, the Pats are in the headlines too. When free agency kicked off on Friday, rational was thrown out the window. Players came and went and enormous amounts of money were thrown out to average players. The Pats were more of a seller though; they traded Matt Cassell and Mike Vrabel to the Chiefs for the 34th pick in April's draft. Bittersweet indeed. It was not just the Chiefs that signed away our players, as the Broncos took Gaffney and Paxton. Most ironic is the not the McDaniel aspect but the Pioli one. Actually, it was the Cheifs that started all this in the first place. After Pollard knocked Brady out for the season in Week 1, Cassell got the opportunity. The Chiefs created the situation for Cassell, and now he heads there.
The Pats did fill 2 holes via signing RB Fred Taylor and TE David Baker.
The Celtics can really piss you off sometimes. Case in point; how does one explain 2 amazing wins on the road this week(over Phoenix 128-108 and Denver 114-76) then struggling to beat the Pacers(104-99) and also losing to 2 awful clubs(to LAC 93-91 and Detroit 105-95)? It might be that they miss Scal, Allen and Garnett. Who knows? The team has a lot of work to do though, clearly, but still has the best record in the East (47-14) alongside CLE and leads the division by 16.5 games.
Bruins time. Much better week. After losing horrendous games to Florida and TB, the team finally came home and got it together. The scapegoat was Florida first; the black-and-gold smashed them 6-1! 4th liner Bitz had a pair of goals but it was the combo of Vokoun out of action with the flu and Ryder's return that showed how the team did well. Or was it? 2 nights later the Bruins did even better as they bashed the Ducks 6-0. Ryder did have 2 goals and an assist though. The game got ugly as one would expect from a shellacking like the B's gave Anaheim. Looch subsequently missed a big time affair w/ the Caps as he needed rest for a bloody fist from the prior game. They could of used him too. The Caps had 3 one goal leads but the Bruins responded each and every time. A 3-3 tie ended early in OT as a Semin blast fooled Timmy and the Caps stole one 4-3. Though they did win 3 of 4, they were all really 1 goal games. All we know is the Bruins and Caps are the 2 best teams and possibly destined for an Eastern Conf. Finals battle. That would surely go 7 games. But the Devils are on fire too w/ the return of Marty, as the standings will show in a moment. The Bruins are still in a solid position with the trade deadline approaching this week. The team plays 4 matches! The busy week opens with a home games vs. Philly, Phoenix and Chicago before heading to NY for a tilt with the Rangers.
Lastly, the BC Eagles hoops club won their lone game this week as they knocked off another top 25 club in FSU. Two games remain(NC State and G Tech) before the ACC tourney.
