These days, this here weekly Boston sports summary revolves around the Celts, Bruins and Eagles. The Eagles(18-6) basketball club is in the midst of a great battle with the Deacons(17-3) and aim to maintain there spot in 3rd of 12 clubs in the ACC Standings.
Meanwhile, a big week for the Celts turned sour after another close crushing loss at the Garden. The team entered the week with the 2 best teams in the West, the Lakers and Spurs. In both contests, the team faltered down the stretch and lost. The Celts blew 4th quarter leads in both contests. Unacceptable. The Lakers pushed the green to OT and held on for a 110-109 win as Allen missed a shot at the buzzer. The Spurs hung around and outscored the green 31-23 in the 4th, and a 93-90 Celts lead evaporated on the combo of poor officiating and bad luck, exactly the same scenario as the Lakers loss earlier in the week. The Spurs won 105-99. Were both losses aided by horrific officiating? Absolutely. But, the team should have closed out both games. A learning experience indeed. Moreover, the club did beat the 76ers and Knicks this week as well. The team, with a 42-11 record, still holds a 15 game lead in the division.
The Bruins are rolling along. Amazing story that I'm watching and some of you're following here. The team took 5 out of 6 possible points this week. The black-and-gold went down to Philly and smothered them 3-1 behind another spectacular performance by Tim Thomas. The following night saw the Bruins travel to Ottawa and scoop up a 4-3 shootout win. A Saturday matinee in Beantown with the Flyers was a great one. Fernandez returned from a month long back injury and did okay. The Bruins and Flyers battled in a physical hockey game that luck sided with the visitors. The Bruins blew a 3-1 lead and the game went to OT. After the Bruins struck the post and missed the GW goal, the Flyers went the other way and scored after the puck deflected off Ference and somehow went into the net. Nemesis Randy Jones got credit with the goal. But a solid week indeed. The Bruins hold a 21 point lead over MTL in the division, as the standings below show. This week, the Bruins face the West' best club in the Sharks. Road games in NJ and Nashville close out the week. After playing 7 games in 12 days, the team catches a break with just 4 games in the next 13 games.
