NOVEMBER 2008 BOSTON SPORTS RECAP

November is just about over. For many reasons sports fans in New England such as myself have a great deal to be thankful for. The first is the Boston College Eagles football squad. The team went all the way to the ACC Championship but lost to the Hokies to just miss out on the Orange Bowl. They lost many solid players, most notably QB Matt Ryan(who is leading the Falcons club to a 8-4 record). But the team has done very well under Crane and despite losing him to an injury last week, the team welcomed in the Terps as the Eagles aimed for their second consecutive ACC Atlantic crown. The team, led by true freshman QB Davis, won 28-21. The defense, one of the best in the nation, is led by Herzlich and Co. and the offense is strong with RB Harris. All chipped in for the win. The team ends the regular season 9-3! They are ranked 17th in the nation. The Hokies are ranked 25th, so the matchup next weekend is a great one. Here's hoping for payback! The winner will make one of the 5 BCS games, the Orange Bowl! Go Eagles!
The Bruins finished this month at an unbelievable 11-1 mark! They are still in first place in the Northeast, and are tied with the NYR for the most points in the Eastern Conference. The team had a great week once again, despite falling to the Sabres in Buffalo early in the week to stop the black and gold from going undefeated in the month. The team trounced the Isles 7-2 in a black Friday matinee, getting timely scoring and also winning a few brawls in the 3rd period! The next night the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings came into town. The Wings are dominant once again this year, and had lost only once on the road this year! The Bruins took a 3-0 lead and Manny Fernandez won back to back games to improve his record to 7-1 and the Bruins mark at 16-4!
The club is not just winning games, they're destroying opponents and have an astonishing 80-51 GF/GA mark! They have two #1 goalies and great weeks from Krejci, Savard, Ryder, Kessel and Wheeler have the team scoring at will! They skate so well and are really physical! The trend should continue as the team has an easier schedule in December, highlighted by many games versus the lowly Southeast Division. The team plays Tampa and Florida this week! Go Bruins!
The Celtics? Ho-hum. They just throttle opponents every night and hardly ever meet a match. They simply blow teams out, much like last year. They currently own a league best 16-2 mark. The club is in the midst of an 8 game win streak, thanks in part to relatively easy wins this week over Golden State, Philadelphia and Charlotte. The team has 3 home games upcoming, highlighted by a great matchup versus the steady Magic!
As for the Patriots, things changed today. The team spoiled a great week for our teams. They came in at 7-4 vs. the Steelers at 8-3. A win would even things up and give the club a tie breaking advantage is necessary. Things looked good early on, as the Pats scored a TD early on setup by a Rothlisberger pick deep in their own end. The team nursed a 10-3 lead for much of the 1st half, and after the Steelers evened the score, the Pats entered the Steelers red zone in the final minute of the half. But the team could not score 7 and had to settle for a short field goal attempt, that of course, missed. The Pats were demoralized and the 10-10 halftime scored did not add up considering the Pats dominated. The second half was a disaster, as the team turned the ball over numerous times included at least 3 fumbles and some Cassell picks. The team played horrific and got outscored 23-0 in the 2nd half. The low points were the fumbles, especially a Slater kickoff fumble at the 5 yard line. Ouch. So baring a miracle, the playoffs are out of reach. The last 4 games are for pride. The Pats sit with the Dolphins at 7-5, one game behind the 8-5 Jets. But the Pats have a horrible conference record and mediocre division record. The hold basically no advantages, so unless they run the table it's all pride from here.
