The BC Eagles at 5-3 welcomed the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame at 5-3 into Alumni Stadium for a battle of the two premier Catholic powerhouses. The Eagles picked off Clausen 4 times and the defense was stellar in posting their 3rd shutout of the 2008 campaign! The final was 17-0, and the 6th win makes the Eagles bowl eligible. They still have 3 games left, all in the ACC. If they win out they will go to the ACC Championship game! They travel south to take on the Seminoles next weekend.
The Revs are the premier MLS team since the league birthed about a decade ago. The team started off so good and led the league in points for the majority of the season. But they faltered at the end with injuries and red cards and had to settle for a 1st round matchup with the Fire. The Fire won 3-0 this week to knock the good guys out.
The Celtics are just simply dominating. They are playing the Pistons as this goes to the web. It's an intriguing rematch of last seasons Eastern Conf. Championship. Iverson will play, whom was traded to Det. from Denver for McDyess and Billups. I feel the Nuggets got the better 1/2 of the deal. As for the Celtics, they arrived in Houston with a 2-1 record and took on the undefeated and very good Rockets. The good guys pulled out a nice 4 point victory. The next night the green bashed the Thunder(formerly the Sonics) by 13 and headed back to Boston at 4-1 and back in 1st place. The dismantled the Bucks 101-89 and are 5-1 as they ball now.
The Bruins are the talk of the town this week and hopefully beyond! The team is hot. They took on Toronto at the Garden and won 5-2 behind a hat trick from the young and talented Blake Wheeler(who changed his jersey# right before the puck drop). The next team the black-and-gold had to dish out payback to was the Sabres. The teams battled for the top spot in the Northeast Division. The team went with backup goalie Manny Fernandez and it paid off as the good guys won 3-1 behind goals from Savard, Wideman and and Kobasew(his first game back since the broken leg injury). The team has the points in the conference save for the NYR.
- Bruins 19 pts
- Sabres 19 pts
- Habs 18 pts
- Leafs 16
- Sens 14 pts
This week the team will take on 3 clubs from the Original 6: the Hawks, Habs and NYR. We wish them the best this week.
Last but not the least are the Patriots. Needless to say, I was steaming that they blew the game last week vs. the hated Colts. In short, they challenged the wrong bad calls, they played to conservative and let the Colts win. The good guys did lead 12-7 late, but the Colts retook the lead 15-12 before the Pats tied it up at 15 up. Gaffney was wide open for the go-ahead TD but he dropped the ball in the end zone all by himself. They had to settle for three. It was a horrific play. He was in the end zone with no player around him and he just dropped it, very reminiscent to Caldwell in the AFC Championship in Indy couple years back). After the Colts took an 18-15 lead late, the Pats charged back in the final moments. They went down the field and had a 3rd and 1 at the Colts 30 yard line. If they got the 1st down, they could go in for the score maybe. At worse, they don't get the 1 yard needed and kick the tying field goal. But the worst scenario happened. The team actually got 1st down but..............Thomas hit an opposing player after the whistle and a 15 yard penalty was tacked on and had to replay the 3rd down situation. In the end, they had to go for it on 4th down now that they were out of field goal range. They did not get the 1st, and eventually the game ended 18-15. The Pats were shocked and mad! It was a game they should of had.
The good news was the team regrouped and pounded the Bills 20-10. They dominated all game as Cassell(23-43, 243 yards), Green-Ellis(26 rushes, 105 yards) helped aid the offense in the route. The defense was great, getting picks from O'Neal and Hobbs and totally shutting down the Bills rushing attack. The only score was basically a kick return in garbage time. What stands out the most is that: A-Welker had 10 catches for 107 yards, becoming the 1st player in NFL history to open a season with 9 straight 6+ catches games B- The team defeated the Bills for the 10th consecutive time C- The team had a new team record of a 19 play drive in the final frame that led to a score and took up most of the quarter!
So, the team is still in first place in the division. Check out the updated standings.
- Pats 6-3
- Jets 6-3
- Dolphins 5-4
- Bills 5-4
Next week the Pats host the Jets and hope to get a stronghold of the division. The game will occur this Thursday! The week after they go the Miami for a re-match. All these division games are so important as tiebreakers to decide the division crown appear evident! Go Pats!
