We have a great deal to get too today. Before I delve into the Pats and Red Sox, I must give some other less heralded local teams. The Bruins played 4 matches and walked away with 4 points. That may get you the 8th spot at best at that pace. The team opened their home schedule with the Pens. The team lost in a shootout. Same for the next night in Buffalo.
The team welcomed the lowly Leafs into town. They held a 2-0 lead halfway through, highlighted by a massive plexi-glass shattering hit by Lucic and a center ice smash by Wideman. But the team fell 4-2 after giving up 4 unanswered goals. Low point we hope. But the team beat the Thrashers soon thereafter 5-4 after a hat trick by Lucic. The black and gold head out to the northwest as they have a 3 game trip against Western Conference clubs from our neighbor above. Savard leads the team in points and the team is playing fairly well.
The NE Revs clinched another playoff spot, further cementing their status as the best MLS team ever. They play the Fire this Thursday at Gillette.
Speaking of Gillette, the Pats faced off with the 2-4 Rams. The team caught a break when RB Jackson could not go. But certainly the Pats had little sympathy, as they are without team leaders Maroney/Brady/Harrison for the season. The team was so beat up, undrafted rookie RB Green-Ellis got the call. He played poorly, but Faulk's 100 plus all-purpose yards, Welker and Moss's great days and Thomas' 2 sacks propelled the Pats to a close 23-16 win. The win puts the Pats back in first at 5-2. The Bills are also 5-2, and the Jets and Dolphins look above. Cassell played well too. The Pats was not penalized at all, which has never happened in team history. (731 games!) The Pats play the rival Colts next Sunday night on national TV.
So the Red Sox season is over after losing Game 7 one week ago today. Who showed up though? Who didn't. Well, keep reading.
Mark Kotsay played 1st base. He hit only .233, same as his OBP. Not good stats, but played solid defense and hit the ball hard. Big Papi struggled, hitting only .124. He did have a huge 3 run shot in Game 5 to ignite the comeback, but that's hardly what we expect from him. Youk was tremendous, playing great defense and batted .333 and 6 RBI. Pedroia was fabulous, he hit .346 with 3 homers. Bay was awesome and hit .292 but walked 7 times! Drew had only a few hits but made them count. But his bases loaded K in Game 7 will unfortunately be all anyone remembers from the epic Red Sox/Rays series. Crisp supplanted Ellsbury(o-14) and led the team in OBP and hit an astounding .450. Varitek was horrible, batting 1 for 20. Tough way to end his career in Boston, unless he some way resigns. His one hit was a solo shot. Lowrie batted only .111.
On the pitching side, no starter looked good. Lester had a 4.97 ERA, Dice-K had a 4.09 figure. Beckett got rocked. His ERA? 9.64. Wake got 1 start. He gave up 5 runs in 2.2 innings. The bullpen was solid though. Okajima pitched 7.1 scoreless innings, while Paps continued his scoreless playoff career by throwing 5.1 scoreless innings. Masterson was a stud too. He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up 1 lone run. The goat was Delcarmen though. He gave up a whopping 7 runs in just 2 total innings.
Lastly, my Billerica Indians, ranked in the top 15 once again in Massachusetts, finally lost. They lost to the state's best, Dracut. They are still 6-1 though. And the BC Eagles lost badly to UNC. The team was ranked #23 in the country before the loss. The Celts open their season this week.
