The Patriots welcomed the streaking Jacksonville Jaguars into Gillette Stadium for a Saturday night nationally televised divisional playoff tilt. The 16-0 Patriots, on the brink of the being named the greatest football team ever, defeated the 12-5 Jags 31-20.
Tom Brady's eye popping numbers told the story- 26 of 28 for 3 scores- breaking an all-time record for highest completion percentage ever, regular season or playoffs. The recently named NFL MVP was dominate all night and threw 2 scores to Watson and one to Welker. Meanwhile, Brady's success set up Maroney to excel as he ran for 122 yards on 22 carries.
The defense was solid enough. The team bended at times but did not break. They got a strip sack from Warren and a late pick from Harrison.
The 17-0 Pats will take on the Chargers at Gillette next Sunday afternoon and the weather expects to be brutal. The Chargers gave up over 400 yards to Manning and the Colts but still won the game. The Pats defeated the Chargers 38-14 at Gillette week 2. But both teams are different now for the better. The Pats should win the AFC Championship convincingly but expect a good game. The Pats are 15 point favorites. The winner will take on the Giants/Packers NFC Championship game winner in the Super Bowl in early February.
Check back next week for the results. Go Pats!
The Celtics had a tough week. They fell at home to the lowly Bobcats, blowing a 2nd half lead. Same story a few nights later. They blew a 74-70 lead late and lost to the Wizards. The Celtics did win between the 2 games, they beat the Nets in NJ. So the 1-2 week left them at 30-5. Still not to bad though.
The Bruins had a poor week too but saved face over the weekend. They welcomed in the Hurricanes on Tuesday and lost- 1-0. Things got worse after the team lost to the Habs again
(0 for 5 this season and 9 straight overall) at home soon thereafter. After losing 6, winning 3 then losing 2, the team headed to Philadelphia for an afternoon tilt. The Bruins, still mad that Flyers Randy Jones blindsided Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron(who has yet to return), played with intensity and matched the cheap and dirty Philadelphia club. After falling quickly 1-0 with backup Alex Auld in net, the team scored 3 straight goals and led 3-1 without key players such as Alberts, Murray and Axelson. But the Flyers tied it with 2 late goals and almost won in regulation if not for the brilliance of Auld. The Bruins withstood the late Flyers rally and went into overtime and won on a shot by Aaron Ward(his 2nd goal in 2 games since his return from a broken foot). The Bruins hope this breeds momentum into Thursday's home game vs. the mediocre Leafs. They sit at 22-18 thus far. In other Bruins note, Captain Zdeno Chara was named an NHL All-Star starter but guys like Savard and Thomas got shafted.
Lastly, college hoops are ongoing and league play had begun. The UMass Minutemen and the BC Eagles are both 11-4 thus far. Go Pats!
