The 2007 Boston College Eagles reached their peak after beating Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on national television. The improbable win put the Eagles as the #2 team in the nation, at 8-0 and 4 wins away from the national championship game.
The team slipped and went 2-2 in those games and went on to the ACC Championship vs. V.T. again in Jacksonville. Both teams were ranked in the top 11-it could've been mistaken as the actual BCS championship game.
Things looked bright early. BC dominated the 1st quarter and at one point in the 1st half outgained the Hokies 156-16! A Jamie Silva QB strip and return for a td put the Eagles up and eventually led 16-7. Then the game changed. As the team lined up for the extra point and a 17-7 lead, the PAT was blocked and returned the length of the field for 2 VT points. Instead of 17-7, it was 16-9. The momentum was a evened up and eventually the score was 16-16 at the half.
Early on, BC entered VT territory very deep but managed only 3 points instead of 21. A blocked FG, a punt and a failed 4th down attempt kept the VT hopes alive.
The 3rd quarter was scoreless as a defensive battle ensued. The Eagles dealt with a string of injuries as the game progressed, including Pruitt. Star CB Tribble was inactive to make things worse. VT scored a td with 7 minutes left and led 23-16. Ryan(33-52) 305 yards rallied and BC was poised to tie the score. But a 4th down pick at the VT 10 yard line ended all hope. BC got one last chance late but threw a pick with less than a minute to go that was taken to the house for 7 and the game ended stunningly 30-16.
VT heads to the BCS Orange Bowl and BC awaits their fate. In years past, BC gets bypassed because the games are played in the South with warm weather. BC is the only ACC team in the upper East Coast and always gets shafted. They usually get bypassed by other teams below them in the standings and who BC beat head-to-head in the season. It's a sham. If I was BC, I'd decline any invitation unless it's the Gator Bowl or Chick-fil-A Bowl. Those are worthy of a BC team ranked in the top 15 all year and bring a Heisman candidate in Ryan to the table. We'll find out in a few hours.
In case you have not heard, the Boston Celtics are really good. They have had the best record in the NBA since day one. The team started their week with a loss to Cleveland in overtime on the road. But the team quickly rebounded and beat the Cavs today at home. In between that, they beat the Knicks on national television 104-59. That's not a misprint-104-59. They won the next night in Miami in a route again. The 3-1 week put them at 14-2 on the year and a beautiful 9-0 at home!
The Bruins continue to play well out of the spotlight.(The Pats are 11-0 and the Red Sox are discussing a Santana trade-I pray they don't do it) The week started off vs. the Flyers, the team that waa chippy last time and hurt Bergeron for the season. They did so again. This time it was not Randy Jones, but Scott Hartnell. He cheapshoted Alberts against the board and was eventually suspended 2 games, same as Jones. Though the Bruins went on to a deliciously convincing 6-3 win, no immediate retaliation occured. Very disappointing on that end despite the satisfying victory.
The Bruins, battling in a tight division, traveled to Florida 2 matches. They won again 4-3 vs. the Panthers and sat 1 point behind MTL for 2nd place and 6 points behind OTT for 1st. But they fell to Tampa 4-1 last night and sit at 13-9 on the season.
