Records broke everywhere during the Patriots 38-36 win on the road versus the New York Giants. The Pats came in as a whopping 15 point favorites against the playoff bound 10-5 Giants and despite playing poorly, they defeated the G-men rather easily.
The came was televised on 4 major networks so the entire globe could witness a chance at history; no team has accomplished a 16-0 regular season. In this day and age, getting one win takes a great deal, never mind 16. The game was hyped more than any other regular season matchup to date and the Giants started early.
The Giants took a 7-0 lead early on but the Pats scored 10 unanswered points to take a 10-7 lead in a loud environment. Battling Manning, Jacobs and Burress, the Pats fell behind again after an unknown Domenik Hixon ran back a kickoff 74 yards and the Giants led 14-10. On the ensuing play, Brady hit Moss for a score but was flagged 15 yards for a celebration penalty that set Hixon up for his easier runback.
The Pats scored 6 quick points off the leg of Gostkowski and led 16-14 at the 2 minute warning. But Manning and Co. scored right before the half and the Pats were shockingly trailing 21-16 at the half. The Giants continued to play perfect in the 2nd half and actually led 28-16. Nobody panicked though. It was a regular season game and the Pats had zero to play for outside off the record. It was another nationally televised game at night in front of a hostile crowd. The Pats did not blink. Instead, they fought back and scored 3 straight TD's and won.
Moss and Welker stood firm and caught balls and blocked and Maroney ran hard and the team led 38-28 at the 2 minute warning. The Giants scored late but the game was in garbage time, thus the 38-35 final. The Pats ended the season 16-0 and continue to position themselves as the best team ever. The team opens the playoffs at home after a bye week.
Meanwhile, the records continued outside the 1st 16-0 record. First, the team broke the 98' Vikings most points in a season mark with ease. The old mark of 556 points was shattered as the 07' Pats scored 589! Brady's two TD passes broke Manning's all time mark of 49! Moss got 2 scores to give him 23 TD's breaking Jerry Rice's 22 mark! The Pats outscored their opponents by +315 passing the old mark of 292 points via the 42' Bears! The win made it 19 straight regular season wins, surpassing the old mark of 18 by................guess who..........the Patriots, from Oct. 03' through Oct. 04'! Brady threw for 356 yards in the finale (32-42, 356, 2 TD's) giving him a franchise record of 4,806 passing yards. Welker's 11 grabs for 122 yards and Moss's 6 grabs for 100 yards in the finale helped Tom break the old mark! Speaking off Welker, his 112 catches are a new Patriot high. Speaking of Moss, he gained 1,493 passing yards, breaking Morgan's 86' record by 2 yards! So the new season begins, the one that matters most. Belichick and Co. will have the team focused on the game at hand after a bit of celebrating. Check back next weekend for a preview of who will travel to Gillette in January.
