So we meet once again for the consistent Sunday night blog, centering on the sports scene in Boston. Though my life includes other aspects of life, especially education, politics, current events, music, family, friends, traveling and exercise, it's sports that carry this blog, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
So let's start with the Patriots. They went to Dallas earlier tonight and faced the undefeated Cowboys. Both teams were 5-0 and had the two best offenses. Tom Brady easily out dueled Tony Romo and the Pats crushed the boys' 48-17. The 48 points marks the 6th straight game this season they scored at least 34 points. Brady threw for 5 td's, adding his name to the record books for most consecutive games in NFL history with at least 3 td's. His 21 td's through 6 games is the most ever, passing Brett Favre's 20 scores in 1996. Tom's 5 td's also broke a NE Patriots record. Welker and Stallworth both had 100 yard receiving games.
The team cruised despite playing without superstars Ben Watson, Lawrence Maroney and Richard Seymour. Watson had a slight injury early, Maroney missed his 3rd straight game and Seymour has yet to play this year. Brady threw for 388 yards and the Pats got a 14-0 lead early and never looked back. The first place Pats sit at 6-0 and in first place in the AFC East by far. They travel to Miami to take on the winless phins' next weekend. Congrats on another impressive blowout win for the good guys!
The Red Sox had an okay week. They are playing the Cleveland Indians in the ALCS. The Sox won the first game 10-3 behind another gem from Josh Beckett. Lowell and Ramirez each drove in 3 runs while crushing Sabathia and taking a 1-0 series lead. Unfortunately, the team lost the next night despite roughing up Carmona and relinquishing a 3-1 lead. Schilling struggled but the Sox had a 6-5 lead in the later innings, but the Indians rallyed to tie it at 6. The Sox had many chances to win in the late innings but the game went to extras.
The Sox refused to take a game the Indians were seemingly giving them, instead gave up a 7 runs in a disgraceful 11th inning. They had many chances for a walk-off win but lost 13-6 in 11. The series is 1-1, with the winner going to the World Series with home field advantage. The teams are scheduled to play the next 3 in Cleveland, starting Monday. The series is likely to come back to Boston with one team getting the upper hand. We all wish the Sox the best this week and hopefully soon thereafter.
The BC Eagles took a 20-0 lead in South Bend and never looked back en route to a 27-14 win over Notre Dame. The team improved to 7-0 behind great games from Matt Ryan and Andre Callender. The team moved up to #2 in the nation in the USA Today poll. For those who do not know, that is mind boggling. There are well over 125 teams in the NCAA and your Eagles are #2! They are off next week but travel to V Tech a week from Thursday. Virginia Tech is ranked in the top 12 so it may be the game of the year for both clubs and the ACC conference.
Lastly, let's quickly talk about the Celtics, Bruins and my Indians. The Bruins lost a tough 2-1 game to the Stanley Cup Champion Mighty Ducks Wednesday but bounced back to beat the Kings 8-6 and Sharks 2-1. They finished a great road trip 3-2 and await Tampa for Thursday's home opener. The Celts are 2-0 in the pre-season and look good in Italy. Lastly, it can't all be good. The 4th ranked Billerica Indians got upset at Dracut 26-15. It was the first loss of the year but they hope to rebound next week vs. St. Johns Prep.
Check back next week for a blog on the week that was. Hopefully we'll be making plans for the Red Sox in the World Series.
