What a week it was. The Red Sox entered the postseason by defeating the Angels in game one of the division series 4-0. Josh Beckett, the ace of the Red Sox staff, pitched a flawless complete game shutout.
In game 2, the Sox overcame a poor outing by Dice-K via great bullpen work and a 9th inning walkoff home run for Manny Ramirez. K-Rod was on the mound in a 3-3 tie but Manny hit a 3 run monster shot and the Sox headed to the left coast in hopes of a sweep.
And a sweep it was. The Angels, decimated by injuries and untimely hitting, lost to Curt Schilling and the local nine 9-1. The Sox got 7 shutout innings from Schill and home runs by Ortiz and Ramirez in route to the win and the sweep.
So, who had a good series? Papi was unbelievable, getting on base nearly every at bat, whether via home run, walk or single. Ramirez was nasty too, hitting 2 massive homers. Lugo did pretty good too. But it was Big Papi, who was on base nearly every at bat ( his average was unofficially above .700 and his obp was around .800!), that carried the offense.
The Sox gave up a meager 4 runs in 3 games, 3 by Dice-K and one by Gagne. Okajima, Papelbon, Delcarmen and Lopez did their past out of the pen. What a series as the Red Sox dominated in all aspects and await the winner of the Cleveland-NYY series, which Cleveland leads 2-0 in the best of 5 series. The tribe could and should win tonight to set up a matchup of the 2 best clubs in baseball. The series starts Friday in Boston. Go Sox and congrats.
Meanwhile, the Bruins opened their season and lost the opener 4-1 in Dallas. But the club won the next night 3-1 in Phoenix behind Tim Thomas. Bergeron scored in both contests. The Billerica Indians won again, this time over Central Catholic. They remain the #4 ranked high school football program in the state. They take their undefeated record into next week's contest over Dracut.
Speaking of the # 4, the B.C. Eagles demolished Bowling Green 55-24 at The Heights. The team improved to 6-0 and are ranked #4 in the country. They sit behind LSU, California and Ohio State. That is absolutely amazing. The team proved once again why they're the best secondary in the country, as they got 6 interceptions (3 by Jamie Silva). Matt Ryan (4 td's) had another monster game and the Heisman is getting closer and closer. They take on Notre Dame next Saturday. Good Luck.
And last but not least how about the Patriots. They won again, dispatching the Cleveland Browns 34-17. Though they looked average at times they still crushed the Browns without Maroney. Morris filled in once again (21 rushes, 102 yards) and Watson caught 6 balls for 107 yards and 2 td's. Meanwhile, Tom Brady had 3 more touchdowns, giving him 16 thus far and only 2 picks. He threw for 3 td's in five straight games, which ties an NFL record. His numbers are staggering. Oh yeah, Seau had 2 picks in the win. The 5-0 Pats take on the first place Dallas Cowboys next week. One more stat for you: The Patriots are only the 4th team in NFL history to win their first 5 games by a margin of 17 or more. Amazing team.
