the good, the bad, the ugly and the 38 special

One and a half games. 1+1/2 1.5. The Red Sox had a tough time last week. They struggled with Tampa and then welcomed in the pinstripes for three games and a chance to bury the bad guys. Well they lost 2 of 3 and the Yanks pulled within 4.5 games as we all woke up this past Monday.
The Red Sox went into Toronto; they should have won at the very minimum 2 of 3. Well, they inexcusably lost all three games. Even worse, the Yanks swept the O's and the lead was an astonishing 1.5 games Thursday morning. Had the Sox won last Sunday night, the lead would have been 6.5. But they lost and 4 days later they were only up 1.5. The Sox took 2 of 3 in Tampa this weekend, but should have won the final game but bowed out 5-4. They blew a lead the prior night but managed to come back and win.
So yeah, the Sox are playing poor baseball. They had the best record in baseball all year, since April, but this past week that ended. And without the best record, they'll have to travel in October. They will not win it all if they don't regain the best record. Well, probably not.
So here's the scenario. The Sox are up 1.5 games and have 6 to play, all at home. If they win all 6 they guarantee the division and likely home field throughout the playoffs. Even if the Indians or Angels tie us, we hold advantages. The Yanks play seven games, all on the road I believe. So it's a big week. The team did clinch a playoff spot this week which is great but not the ultimate goal. First, win the division. Second, get the best record. Third, line up the staff, get Manny back (yes, he's still out) and try to right the ship. If the postseason began today, we'd lose. But we have a week to fix things and attempt to win it all.
Okay, so the atrocious week for the Sox is passed. Congrats to Josh Beckett on his 20th victory and thus becoming the MLB's first 20 game winner since 2005.
The week featured many good things too.The BC Eagles protected their #12 ranking and beat Army 37-17 and moved up one spot in the rankings. The Billerica Indians won again defeating Methuen to improve to 3-0 and are now in the top 5 high school football poll.
The Bruins started exhibition and expect predictions real soon. The Patriots pulled a 38 special; they scored 38 points for the third consecutive game by upending the Bills at Gillette 38-7. Much like the first two games, the Pats dominated in all facets of the game. Brady, Moss, Maroney and the defense looked flawless. Keep it up boys and the fading Sox will be an afterthought. Check next week's blog for the season wrap-up for the Sox as they enter the playoffs, hopefully in first place. They deserve it; they've been in first place since day one. Go Red Sox!
