This past Monday night I attended the evening practice for only season ticket holders and Foxboro residents. It was nice sitting 5 rows back on the 50 yard line. Here is what I witnessed.
-The biggest men on the field were Rashad Moore, Wesley Britt and Clint Oldenburg.
-The following players were wearing red non-contact jersey's L. Maroney, J. Seau, T. Brady and sideline man R. Moss
-A few injuries occurred- M. Kranchick, L. Izzo, B. Yates and R. Gay. Izzo got his ankle/lower leg wrapped and returned, Kranchick looked in serious pain, and Gay seems to always get injured, so no real surprise there.
-The punting situation looked clear, as T. Malone and D. Baugher took turns punting. The latter looked far superior.
-S. Gostowski seemed to be causing a friendly uproar while he caught punts at the corner of the endzone. He was yucking it up with all the fans stationed in the corner of the end zone. It appeared he asked the fans for the football back on a few occasions and the fans seemed dismay. Not to worry though, at the very end he did indeed give the football to a youngster, leaving the corner to a fleet of cheers.
-Owner B. Kraft spent some quality time on the field, yucking it up with the secondary, especially E. Wilson, E. Hobbs and T. James.
-R. Harrison sent a rookie to the sidelines to get him a squirt bottle, causing a laugh.\
-B. Meriweather looked good, despite his toothpick lower legs, clearly the smallest calves of the secondary. He made a great interception during the late game situational scrimmage off of m. Cassell.
-Speaking of Cassell, he looked awful, missing receivers often and tossing a few picks. Brady threw very little if at all, giving Cassell and M. Gutierrez the snaps. Though Cassell will win the backup role at QB, Gutierrez was faster and more accurate during the end zone corner throws. He even led the pack in every single jog/sprints to close the practice.
-One player had to run laps during the practice, DL Santonio Thomas, for reasons unbeknown to the fans.
-Though he was in a red jersey, Seau looked ripped, and seemed to be having much fun throughout.
-So who's jersey was most prevalent during the closed practice, A tie between T. Bruschi and Tom terrific.
-Some fans got a kick out of a long blond haired kid on the sidelines, apparently the coach's son. While he spat on the field throughout, fans seemed to be wondering if it was in fact the coach's son. One fan, "I don't see a cloud of smoke over his head, must not be."
-Belichick was walking around, taking part in a few drills, but spent a good deal of time talking to Tom terrific.
-Gaffney and Welker made some nice grabs, but each missed a throw late in the session.
-K. Kight made a nice grab, but otherwise meshed in with others. Same for G. Mills.
-Neither Hawkins nor Samuel were in attendance, for different reasons.
-Hobbs and James both looked good, with the latter making a nice pick too.
-K. Faulk was cutting good, but it was during a non-tackle drill. Same goes for Maroney.
-Bruschi, R. Colvin and M. Vrabel were up to their usual, making plays.
-A. Thomas looked awesome, even picking off Cassell near mid-field during a scrimmage.
-At practice's end, Cassell took snaps during late game situations, they looked poor. Too many short dumps, misses and wasted snaps. Cassell, who looked so-so, really stunk throughout the late game situations, culminated by the pick to the rookie.
-L. Paxton was yucking it up on the sidelines with the ball boys, wearing a cut off shirt exposing his tattoos and his ego all at once. Nice sleeve though.
-B. Watson looked much, much leaner.
-Saw little of R. Seymour, J. Green, K. Brady, P. Woods, K. Washington, D. Stallworth and D. Thomas, for whatever reasons, most likely injuries or the PUP list.
-Bonehead move- the disorientated PA announcer making careless mistakes, highlighted by announcing the 1st preseason match-up vs. the Bucs was Thursday night. I n fact, it was Friday night, but the diehard fans let him know before correcting himself soon thereafter.
-Of course, all of this is one man's opinion, but sitting where I was I missed very little.
-Overall, the team looked good over a gray sky. The secondary looked good for what they had, and Gaffney and Welker were each one miss away from stealing the show.
