It wouldn't be a stretch to call this past week a successful week in the Boston sports scene. The Celtics picked up Kevin Garnett for a bunch of decent players. But since it's not basketball season, I won't comment until the fall.
The Red Sox did well this week. After losing last Sunday to Tampa, the team had an off day before welcoming in the Orioles. After a frustrating loss in the opener, the team won the next two games, including a magical late game rally on Wednesday and a Thursday matinee win less than 24 hours later.
The team traveled to Seattle, a place where the club had lost 8 straight, including a 3 game sweep earlier in the year. Things looked rather bleak after falling in the opener by squandering early opportunities early in the game.
With the losing streak in Seattle at 9 games, the club woke up behind a stellar pitching performance by Dice-K. The team held off a late rally to win 4-3, ended the drought that seemed to haunt the local nine.
Earlier, behind a solid outing by All-Star Josh Beckett, the team routed the Mariners 9-2 to keep the lead in the AL East at 7 games. With the Yanks winning nearly every game, despite taking on weak opponents, the Sox have been admirable at holding down the fort.
What's most important from this weekend was not that the club traded for bullpen stud Eric Gagne, but that the team fought adversity in Safeco Field to end the difficult losing streak. It's not out of the realm of possibility the Mariners and Red Sox will face one another in October, thus ending the road mishaps at Seattle means much. My cap is tipped at the Sox for a vitally solid week.
