- Dodgers 86
- Padres 86
- Giants 82
- Diamondbacks 80
- Rockies 74
Except for the Rockies, all 4 teams in the division have a healthy shot at taking the crown. The Dodgers have three reliable starters, an above average lineup and a fair bullpen. They are a closer and one more reliable starter away from running off with the division. The Padres have a nasty pen', decent offense and a solid rotation. The health of veterans Wells and Maddux will likely determine the club's chances. If the team clicks, expect 90 plus wins. The Giants are the forgotten team this season. They have a respectable lineup with highlighted by Bonds and Durham. Much like the Dodgers, they need one more closer and starter. Both the Dodgers and Giants will address that at the trading deadline. If the Padres falter, the Giants could surpass the LA with help on July 31. The D'Backs are the trendy pick but they need a closer and more offense. If Hernandez and Johnson stay healthy they should stay at or just above .500. 88 wins would be the peak. Colorado can't seem to get it together for whatever reason. Only the heart of the lineup is capable and the staff is a joke. If the young hitters perform they may reach last season's 76 wins. The Rockies peak could be 78 wins.
