Yes, don't be fooled; your 2006-07 Boston Celtics are throwing games by way of tanking. Things really took shape on March 21. With the Bobcats in hailing distance of catching the Celtics in the pursuit of last place in the conference, thus getting closer to the top 2 picks, the Celts officially tanked the matchup. The Celtics put on a show for the home crowd, building an 18 point second half lead. Coach Rivers pulled the starters and the bench blew the game.
Fast forward to April. Key contributors Wally Szerbiack, Paul Pierce, Delonte West and Al Jefferson stayed inactive thus far. The team blew second half leads versus the Bucks on 4/4, the Heat on 4/6, the Hawks on 4/10 and the 76ers on 4/11.
The latter two were the worse, too blatant to excuse. The Heat game was unfair to others trying to pass or stay above Miami in the playoff run. The club is playing hard. It's not so much they openly throw the games, they just let the other teams score easily enough to win, and the club
doesn't lose face. It looks like an honest effort, but that's for only part of the game.
I don't like the draft lottery. Furthermore, I despise it, for obvious reasons. I say win every game, whether your fighting for first, 10th or 13th in the conference. Just win. Don't put your hope in ping pong balls. I just hope the draft lottery has pity on the beloved Celtics for their pathetic sacrifice. Chances are they won't.
