Monthly thoughts- February Part 1

It's only fair to start with the Red Sox. Spring training has begun and everyone has reported, included Manny Ramirez. The first topic is J.D. Drew. How can any team pay him 17 million? When he was earning 11 million per season with the Dodgers last year, even that was a joke. 'd rather have Trot Nixon for 3 million.
How about Julio Lugo. Theo was mesmerized, for whatever reason, with him. Lugo will earn a whopping 9 million per year. The Sox could have kept Alex Gonzalex, Mark Loretta and still had in excess of a million left over. Economically, the deal didn't make sense. Unfortunately, the club tried a middle infield with Gonzalez and Loretta and even after one season, a change was indeed needed.
Keith Foulke has retired. He declined to stay with the Sox, passing up roughly 4 million bucks. Most guys would have triggered their option then rode the bench, instead he opted for a deal with the Indians but retired this month. Let's face it, he admitted he didn't like baseball. He enjoyed hockey and found baseball boring. He didn't enjoy the media in Boston either. Admittedly, personal problems have joined injuries as hampering his professional career. He walks away from a game he disliked, albeit with a ring and upwards of 40 million in totality.
As for the ego-freak Curt Schilling, the Red Sox made a brilliant move by declining Curt's request for an extension. The guy's making a ridiculous amount of money in the final year of his contract. At his age and position, the risk outweighs the reward. The team was not bullied. No player is higher than the organization. Just look what a great move it was to not give Pedro his long term deal before last season. He missed significant time with injuries.
As for the Nation itself, things have gotten to far. Local television stations actually showed the equipment bus leaving the city for Fort Myers! And Dice-K. There were hundreds of media folk to watch him throw batting practice! For some fans, it seems it's difficult to realize they're just human beings. We have to stop treating theses guys like superiors.
